“Many seniors are capable and interested in remaining employed and/or finding a different type of employment after retirement. Most seniors express that they wish to stay active, keep their minds engaged and feel connected to their community. They aren’t necessarily looking for big salaries or lots of responsibility, but more of an opportunity to be productive and utilize their life skills.”

- Brenda Prevost, Executive Director, Seniors Information Centre

The Guardian - May 10, 2008 - Good for seniors good for the economy

Congratulations to the provincial and federal governments in jointly developing the Passport To Employment Program (Voice of Island Seniors, May 6, 2008).

This is proving to be an excellent means of assisting older seniors to return to the labour market and at the same time, meeting greater demands for workers in various segements of our Island economy.

I understand that in the West Prince area this program has been highly successful in re-employing ovr 50 participants of the program. It's good for our seniors and good for our economy.

- Ian MacDonald, Charlottetown

The Journal Pioneer - O'Leary - On a day when she was participating in mock job interviews Pamel Roche received some encouraging news, she received an employment offer from O'Leary Farmers Co-op, for real. Roche has experience in horticulture and drafting. She will be helping to grow the store's garden centre. The Co-op learned about Roche's skills through her participation in the Passport To Employment program for the mature worker.

I think we all got more out of this than we imagined,“ said Roche. Being new to West Prince, she said she learned much about the region from fellow program participants. “It's absolutley the best program I've taken in a long, long time.“ What makes the program special, Roche said, is the participants share their talents and resources with one another“.

If you have been a participant of the Passport To Employment Program please feel free to drop us a comment on your experience.
